WEEKEND ROUNDUP

WEEKEND ROUNDUP

Six of the eight Lancer varsity teams were in action over the weekend in a mix of exhibition and regular season play.

The newly formed golf team kicked things off with a tournament in Windsor, hosted by St. Clair Saints, on Friday. Led by Head Coach, Marc Ray, the foursome made up of Zackary Bernstein, Ryan Erwin, Elliot Villeneuve and Rorey Kehoe had a solid first showing and picked up valuable insight about the league. "The guys played great and were able to overcome their nerves" says Coach Ray. "I am so proud of how all the players were able to put the bad shots or breaks behind them and stay in the present. They truly seized the opportunity to learn and improve as the day went on." The golf team hits the links again on Thursday, in Barrie, at the Georgian College Invitational Tournament.

The women's basketball team got their exhibition season underway as they traveled to Québec for a pair of back-to-back games against l'Outaouais Griffons. With 17 and 16-point performances from returning players Cianah Miller and league veteran Jessyka Maliksi, the team pushed to a 62-58 victory for their first of the season. With a hard fought loss on Saturday, the team wrapped up the weekend with a respectable 1-1 record.

Also in Québec, the men's basketball team faced off against Coach McGuire's alma mater, Bishop's University. The team fought a hard battle against the oversized Bishop's team and found themselves down 89-87 with two minutes on the clock. The experienced and disciplined University squad pulled away in the final minutes of the game for a 101-91 loss for the Lancers.

Women's soccer traveled to Ottawa to take on the Algonquin Wolves (3-1) in a Saturday afternoon match. Returning player, Kennedy Bardawill, scored the team's lone goal in a tough 8-1 loss. The team played incredibly well in the first half and maintained a 1-1 tie after the first 45 minutes. Injuries plagued the team in the second half and the Wolves ran away with the game. The soccer team hits the road again on Thursday, September 22 to travel to Peterborough to face the Fleming Knights.

The women's rugby team had their first tournament of the season over the weekend in Toronto. Hosted by the Humber Hawks, the Lancers secured their first win with a 19-10 win over the host team. Second year Lancer Elayna Reid was the leading contributer for the Lancers with an impressive 30 points in the two-day tournament. Fellow second year Hannah Bender added a try and two converts for nine points, while first year player Briar Harling booted two converts of her own. After a weekend off for rest and recovery the Lancers will look to get back in the win column in their second tournament hosted by Durham Lords on October 1st and 2nd.

The lone team playing on home soil over the weekend, the Men's volleyball squad played host to the Trent University Excalibur and the Ottawa U Gee Gees. The Lancers got off to a solid start with a first set victory over the Excalibur to take the lead in what would be a five set battle. Head Coach, Chris Jenkins, showed off his team's depth with rolling line ups and positional changes. The Lancers went 1-1 with an exciting five set win over the Gees Gees to cap off the day.
