'92-'93 Men's Basketball Team

Building on the success of previous seasons, the 1992-93 Loyalist Lancers Men’s Basketball Team was ready to take a run at Loyalist College’s first ever basketball gold medal. At the outset of the year, Coach Jim Buck was quoted in an interview as saying, “the big step this season is to get to the championships; the next step is to win it all.” Finishing the regular season in second place, the Lancers went into the playoffs focused on that next step, defeating the host Niagara Knights 85-79 in their semi-final match to set up a meeting in the finals against the Cambrian Golden Shield. The game was hard fought with both teams pressuring with strong defence early on. Going into half-time, Cambrian held a slight 37-32 lead. The Golden Shield added to that lead early in the second half, going on an offensive run stretching the score to 49-39; however, that would be the last time Cambrian would have the lead. Over the final stretch of the game, Loyalist paired an impressive offensive output with their league-leading defensive capabilities to outscore Cambrian by fifteen points and finish with an 83-68 victory and secure a gold medal.

In addition to the team’s provincial title, individual accolades and honours included Scott Reid being named as a First Team All-Star, Alan Jones and David Fralick named as Second Team All-Stars and Coaches Bruce Collins and Jim Buck being presented with the OCAA Coaches of The Year award.
