The Lancers kicked off their season with a big 80-49 win over the Georgian Grizzlies Friday night.
In their home opener game, the Lancers looked sharp with a combination of fresh talent and seasoned veterans.
Starters Britt Mason, Kate Raso, Piper Kehoe, Josee Fillion and Hannah Schipper got the team off to a great start, setting the Lancers up for a commanding 29-6 lead after the first quarter.
Mason, a third year Lancer played well at both ends of the court, nabbing 10 rebounds and adding 22 points for her first double double of the season.
As a team, the Lancers moved the ball well and executed their plays with precision. After a bit of a backslide in the third quarter, the Lancers finished strong to take the Grizzlies by 31.
First year Lancer Josee Fillion contributed 12 points while Hannah Schipper was strong under the basket with 7 rebounds and 6 points.
In a tougher matchup on Saturday, the Lancers continued their strong showing with a spread out and selfless offence.
Coach Caleb Hugh had prepared his team for a battle and it paid off. "We knew Centennial was going to be a tough opponent but our team really stepped up", he explains. "Centennial is skilled, tough and quick but we're good decision makers. We've put a lot of focus on playing smart, doing what we do well and dictating the tempo of the game."
First year player Lee Siega brought an energy to the floor that ignited her teammates and the crowd while veteran player Kate Raso was consistently solid throughout the entire game. Siega and Raso both hit double digit points, contributing 11 each and combining for 4 steals.
After a great outing the night before, Brittany Mason was in a league of her own against the Colts. The 5'10 forward hit a milestone with a career high 36 points while also accounting for 13 boards, 3 blocks and 1 steal. Having gone 15-16 from the free throw line, Mason was unstoppable, regardless of where she was on the court. In just two games, Mason earned an outstanding 58 points.
"Britt really came through for us tonight. She was incredible out there and showed that she's one of the top players in the league" adds Coach Hugh. " We've got a really talented team and the girls are making my job of picking starting lines up a tough one, which is a really great problem to have."
The Lancers now enjoy a few well earned days off before they get back in action when they head to Toronto to take on the Seneca Sting Friday November 1st.
