LANCERS GO 3-1 IN FIRST SHOWING

The women's rugby team kicked off their season at Thompson Park in Raglan on Saturday.

Hosted by the Durham Lords, the Lancers started the day by facing local rivals, the St. Lawrence Vikings. Second year Paramedic student Bailey Meraw (Belleville, ON) proved once again why she was named a 2017 League All Star, scoring two tries in the match while fellow All Star Kierstyn Bennet (Wellington, ON) got back into the swing of things with a try of her own. First year Lancer Hanna Fitzgerald (Trenton, ON) booted all 3 converts to give the Lancers a 21-0 final over the Vikings.

Game 2 saw the Lancers face off against the Durham Lords with almost identical scoring results to game 1. Meraw and Bennet both scored tries while first year Lancer Lenna Reid (Belleville, ON) contributed one of her own. Fitzgerald made good on another 3 converts to push the Lancers to their second 21-0 victory of the day.

Taking on the Fleming Knights in game 3, the Lancers came out swinging and never looked back.  First year, practical nursing student Teresa Flegg stole the show with 3 tries, returning athlete Cortney Wright added one, Meraw contributed another to her weekend total and Fitzgerald went 3 for 4 in converts. The Lancers racked up their biggest score of the day, blanking the Knights 33-0.

The Lancers fell 10-0 to the Algonquin Thunder in their final game of the day. A couple of unforced errors at crucial times gave the Thunder the edge they needed to outrun the Lancers and get through the try line.

Overall, the Lancers got off to a great start and showed huge promise for the rest of the season. Coach Ken Fitzgerald and his team get back in action in two weeks time when they participate in the OCAA crossover tournament hosted by Fleming Knights.
