ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR WOMEN'S RUGBY

The women's rugby team competed in the first ever OCAA crossover event in 7s rugby, hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough over the weekend.  The five team that make up the east division, (Algonquin, St. Lawrence, Fleming & Durham) crossed over to take on the opposition in the west (Humber, Seneca, Sheridan, Conestoga).

The Lancers kicked things off with a tough loss against the Humber Hawks. The Hawks (10-1) took a dominating lead in the first half, having capitalized off Lancer errors and held a 21-0 lead at the half. The Hawks continued to find the end zone and the Lancers gave up a 43-0 loss.

Game 2 saw the Lancers bounce back against the Sheridan Bruins. Improvements in tackling and passing made the difference for the Lancers while also showcasing impressive offensive abilities. Third year athlete Courtney Wright got the Lancers on the board with an early try to give her team the edge. Rachel Streeksta, a first year nursing student, contributed 2 tries while second year paramedic student Bailey Meraw contributed 3 of her own for a 30-14 victory.

On day 2 of the tournament, the Lancers faced off against the 2017 League Champions, the Seneca Sting. Meraw started the scoring with an early try, firing the Lancers up and opening the flood gates. First year Lancer Hanna Fitzgerald (Trenton, ON) was the second Lancer to contribute a try, followed by Meraw with her second of the game, then Wright and first year Lancer Teresa Flagg. Fitzgerald, a Occupational Therapy Assistant student, booted 4 converts to push the final score to 33-5.

Finishing out the tournament in style, the Lancers blanked the Conestoga Condors 29-0. Streekstra added 2 more tries to the tournament, along with Wright, Meraw and Fitzgerald who also kicked for 2 converts.
