LANCERS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

LANCERS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

The women's volleyball team started their season with a win on Friday night when they hosted the La Cite Coyotes.
The team started the first set with passion and precision, making great passes and showing off a range of shots on offence. Late in the game with the home team ahead by 4, the Coyotes began to claw their way back and overtook the Lancers with persistent attacks and disciplined defence to win the set 26-24.
The Lancers weren't able to regain their footing and trailed most of the second set to fall behind the Coyotes 2 set to 0.
Facing a sweep in their first game, the young Lancer team dug deep and gained a commanding lead, shifting the tone and momentum of the game in their favour.
Returning to the team after a year off, Jillian Hoftyzer turned up the dial in the third set and managed to fire up the Lancers to push the team to a 25-19 victory.
Still down 2-1, the Lancers rolled over the Coyotes in the 4th to force a 5th and deciding set. Hoftyzer continues to shine with aggressive serving and consistent offence from the front row.

In the 5th set, the Lancers pulled ahead right from the start and maintained the lead through the end of the match to a 15-10 set victory to take the game 3-2.

First year Lancer Geneva Blowemen was terrific in the back row. The 5'5 liberal from Kingston kept the Lancers alive on defence, positioning herself perfectly against the Coyotes attacks and producing great passes off the serve receive.

Lorraine Spellman, a second year Lancer from Halifax, NS, showed once again how she has created a name for herself in the OCAA. Turning decent passes into spot-on sets, Spellman ran a great offence and connected well with all her hitters.

Head Coach Dominique Dawes is happy with how the team came together for the win. "La Cite was a good opponent to help challenge all aspects of our game. This year we have a mix of first year athletes and returning athletes and they worked together to find a way to pick up the victory."

The Lancers take to the road for the first time this season for their swing trip to Barrie and North Bay on October 26th when they take on the Georgian Grizzlies and Canadore Panthers.
