LANCERS JUST SHORT OF COMEBACK AGAINST PATHERS

LANCERS JUST SHORT OF COMEBACK AGAINST PATHERS

The men's volleyball team showed a tremendous amount of heart in their hard fought 3-2 loss to the Canadore Panthers Saturday at home.

In what was shaping up to be a quick, 3 set game, the Lancers dug their heels in at the start of the third and refused to go down without a fight.

Having lost both of the first two sets 25-19, the Lancers played with determination, patience and passion that pushed them past the Panthers to avoid the 3 set sweep.  Lancer veteran Josh Roberts played a big role in the team's come back, recording an impressive 19 kills and 1 block to lead the both teams in scoring with a game high 20 points.

Roberts' teammate Savino Marques also turned in an incredible performance. Marques, who is a first year Lancer but in his second year within the OCAA turned in his best defensive performance of the season. Digging nearly everything that came his way in position 1, Marques became a source of frustration for the Panthers offense and forced them to adjust their attacks mid game. The 5'10 setter added tough serves to the match and controlled the Lancer offense with finesse and intelligence.

The Lancers forced their way back into the game with 25-23 wins in both the third and fourth sets to force a 5th and final set.

The Panthers took a convincing lead right from the start of the 5th and held a 5 point lead at the switch. The Lancers, who were unable to find their footing in the final set, managed to make a bit of a comeback but couldn't overtake the Panthers and fell 15-11 to fall  in the 5 set battle.

The Lancers wrap up the first half of the season with a 3-6 record and and huge strides in overall team improvement. With over a month's break before they get back into regular season play, the Lancers will enjoy a well deserved break to refresh and prepare for the second half.
