LANCERS SHOW PROMISE IN FIRST COMPETITION

LANCERS SHOW PROMISE IN FIRST COMPETITION

The Lancers women's rugby team kicked off their season Saturday when they hosted the first OCAA East tournament of the season.

The Lancers got off to a slow start against St. Lawrence Vikings in the first game of the day. After falling behind on back to back trys in the first half, the team came out with a different energy in the second half. Fourth year veteran Cortney Wright got the Lancers on the board with her first of two try's in the tournament to add to a 19-5 decision for the Vikings.

Next up for the home team were the Durham Lords. Having faced off against the Algonquin Thunder in their first game, the Lords already had a win under their belt and looked sharp moving into their second. The Lancers continued to show improvements in all aspects of their game, but gave up a couple good opportunities that the Lords capitalized on, leading to a final 19-0 decision.

In their third game of the day, the Lancers took down the Fleming Knights 19-5 to for their first win of the season. Wright opened the scoring with a hard fought try to give the Lancers the edge early in the first half. Second year Lancer Hanna Fitzgerald added a try of her own and booted two successful converts before the end of the half to see the Lancers up 14-5. Fellow veteran, Taylor Lapierre scored her team's third try late in the second half to contribute to a 19-5 final.

In arguably their best performance of the day, the Lancers put up a great fight in their last game against a tough Algonquin Thunder squad. Returning players Lola Akindolire and Ava Keyzers turned in stellar performances, both showing incredible tackling abilities and toughness while Madison Kelly-Clarke scored the lone try for the Lancers. With the 15-5 loss, the Lancers finished the day with a 1-3 record but showed tremendous improvement in 4 short games.

Next Up: OCAA Women's Rugby 7s crossover tournament hosted by Fleming College October 5-6, 2019.
