LANCERS CONTINUE TO BUILD IN 2019 SEASON

LANCERS CONTINUE TO BUILD IN 2019 SEASON

The Lancers finished their 2019 season with a 1-6-2 record that does little to acknowledge the accomplishments of the season.

In Coach Rob Terry's second year at the helm and his first full run at recruiting, the team took major strides in the right direction. With a solidified coaching staff in Jordan McConnell, Jordan Courchesne, Emily Osmond and Kevin Greig, the Lancers were a more disciplined and structured team both on and off the field.

Having faced some adversity early on with injuries, the Lancers continued to battle game after game and scored a team high of 11 goals.

While they may have only had 1 win, the Lancers merely seconds away from victory on two other occasions. Early on in the season, the Lancers held a 3-2 lead over the St.Lawrence Vikings until the Vikings scored with 45 seconds left on the clock to end in a 3-3 tie. Then, up by one in the final seconds in Sudbury, the Cambrian Golden Shield scored a heartbreaker in the 90th minute for the Lancers' second draw of the season.

Returning player Ashley MacDonald joined as a late addition but made an immediate and sizeable impact. The 5'11 forward added 4 goals and 8 points to the team's overall total, but it was her leadership, toughness and incredible intensity that were arguably her most valuable contributions.

Fellow returnee Ella Bannon was another key foundation block for the young squad. Bannon's transformation from a quiet, unassuming player in the 2018 season to the feisty, hardworking, dominant player that graced the field in 2019 was impressive. A native of the Belleville area, Bannon booted 3 goals on the season; two of which came in back to back matches on the team's northern road trip to Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

New to the Lancers this season was standout forward, Amy Vieira. Standing at only 5'1", Vieira was constantly matched up against many of the biggest and best in the OCAA East Division and often came out on top in 1 on 1 situations. She very quickly made a name for herself as one of the toughest and most threatening players on the field thanks to her talent, speed and knowledge.

Despite being an excellent mid-fielder, second year Lancer Courtney Bolch jumped back in as goalie to fill the role that best suited the team. Bolch turned in unbelievable performances in nearly every competition and recorded 85 saves on the season to prove it.  With great positioning and agility, Bolch made countless highlight worthy saves to keep her team competitive throughout the season.

Back for her second year with the Lancers, Rachel Cole brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the lineup.  Her abilities at both ends of the field make her a multidimensional threat no matter where she is. Cole, who played a year in the NCAA before coming back home, scored her first goal of the season in the team's 3-3 tie and secured a 4-2 victory of the Sault Cougars with a long range strike in the final minutes of the game.

With the season in the books, Coach Terry has his sights set high for the future of the program. Players like Rachel Cole, Allyssa Prinzen and Amy Vieira, who are returning next year, play a key role in his plan for continued improvement of the team. After a short break, the squad will get back at it and begin their training regimes in preparation for the 2020 season.
