The Loyalist Lancers women's soccer team secured a hard-fought 1-1 tie against the St. Lawrence Surge. Kaylee Wyngaarden opened the scoring for the Lancers 17 minutes into the match with a beautiful goal from outside the box, giving the Lancers early momentum.
St. Lawrence found the back of the net a little over 10 minutes later, leveling the score, but the Lancers held firm for the remainder of the match to earn the 1-1 draw.
In the second half, the Surge came close to take the lead on a breakaway, but first-year keeper Jen Keller made a remarkable save to preserve the Lancers' lead. Keller continued her excellent form throughout the match, making a total of 9 saves. Another Surge breakaway was thwarted by Keller, whose strong play in net proved crucial for Loyalist.
This was only the second game since the recent coaching change that saw the former coaching staff step away from the team for personal reasons. Local soccer expert Tom Moran returned to the program, stepping in as Head Coach with Director of Athletics & Recreation, Cristy Latham serving as assistant coach. The Lancers have continued to progress under their new leadership, showing resilience and development on the field and off.
The Lancers look to build on this result Friday, September 27th when they take on the George Brown Huskies in Toronto.
