Cross Country Runners Notch Top 10 Finishes
Two Loyalist runners have established themselves as serious contenders for the upcoming OCAA championships.
Sarah Law (Barrie, ON) and Bobby Buck (Belleville, ON) both placed in the top 10 at the Centennial Colts Invitational last Saturday. This was the final tune up race before the 2018 OCAA Provincial Championships.
The flat, fast course led to a quick early pace for the lead pack in both races. Law settled into the back of the second pack and used a steady, consistent effort to slowly pick off those who misjudged their effort. By the end of the 6k race she had moved into 7th overall. Her time of 24:30 was less than 30 seconds off the race leader and only 10 seconds away from 4th.
Nicole Flynn (Madoc, ON) was also running in the women's race and improved her time by over 4 minutes from the previous race.
The men covered 8k on the same flat, fast loop. Bobby Buck used a similar tactic as Law, laying off the too-fast early pace and settling into the second pack. A strong mid-race section brought Buck back into a group vying for 3rd overall. He fought hard to the finish and crossed the line 6th overall (27:49). John Liana (Hamilton, ON) and Kai Mackintosh (Belleville, ON) rounded out the Lancers men's team, with both athletes improving their time from previous races.
The team has next weekend off to complete their final training for the OCAA championships. That event will be hosed on October 27th at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Top finishers and teams can qualify for the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships on Nov 10th at Seneca College King Campus.
