Inducted April 7, 2017
Joanne (Garvin) Thompson was born in Belleville, Ontario on April 8, 1957.
Joanne attended Loyalist College from 1980 until 1982. Bringing experience from Carleton University, where she played prior to attending Loyalist College, paid dividends immediately, as Joanne became one of the top guards in the OCAA. Her tenacious defense combined with a natural scoring touch would see her finish fifth in league scoring during the 1980-81 season with a 16.6 points per game average. She scored an incredible forty-two points in a single game, even more impressive as the three-point line was yet to be introduced. This record still stands to date. For this incredible accomplishment she was named the OCAA Athlete of the Week. In her second season her prolific scoring touch continued and she would end up finishing second in the OCAA scoring race, with a 20.3 points per game average. In addition to playing basketball that season, Joanne was a valued member of the women’s fastball team that advanced to the OCAA Championships.
Joanne was named MVP both seasons she was a member of the Lancer women’s basketball team and upon graduation took over the coaching reins for three seasons. She remained the Colleges’ all-time leading scorer for women’s basketball until 2008.
