Bio

Caleb Hugh’s expectations for his athletes revolve around two key factors: attitude & toughness. He believes that having the right attitude is paramount to success in athletics and in life, while toughness is the ability to persevere through adversity.

Hugh spent the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons on the bench with the Lancer men's program as lead assistant coach while maintaining a heavy involvement in the local basketball scene. Having been a part of 3 different highschool teams (St. Theresa's S.S, Quinte S.S & Prince Edward Collegiate Institute) and the County Clippers club program, Hugh’s experience and connections have proven to be a huge asset to his coaching abilities. Hugh took over as head coach of the Lancer women’s program in spring of 2018 after previous coaches Jamie McCourt and Chris Harrison made the decision to step down.

“Player development is a top priority for me” says Hugh, who was named County Clippers Coach of the Year in 2016. “Passion is a huge part of that development. Athletes really need to be passionate about their sport and take pride in the work they put into their craft while embracing the challenge of competition.”

After graduating from Ottawa University, Hugh returned to Belleville to further his education and joined the Lancers basketball team before graduating in 2010.

As a former student athlete, Hugh has firsthand experience dealing with everything that comes with being a student athlete and is excited to start instilling the same pride he has for the Lancers in his new team. “It’s tremendously important for players and coaches to respect the program’s traditions and honour those who have worn Lancer jerseys before us with our best effort on and off the court” say Hugh.

Athletic Director Jim Buck knows Hugh is a good fit for the program. "I'm excited for Caleb to have this opportunity. He's been a proven commodity with us for many years – first as an athlete and then as an assistant coach” Buck says. “I look forward to seeing where this program can go with Caleb at the helm."
