LANCERS CONTINUE TO BUILD THROUGH SECOND HALF

LANCERS CONTINUE TO BUILD THROUGH SECOND HALF

Record: 2-7 (Eighth place in OCAA East Division – top 8 qualify for playoffs)

Notable player stats:

First-year outside hitter Aingele Campbell-Stewart (45 kills - 2.2 points per set), first-year setter MeganWheelans (124 assists – 3.65 A/S) first-year Left side hitter Paula Bailey (38 kills - 1.8 points per set and has recorded 67 digs for the season).

Breakdown:

This season has been centered on the growth of the team, lead by the only two returning players on the squad, Rachel Streekstra and Rachel Cole. The Lancers have taken strides in limiting unforced errors, staying aggressive with every ball and focusing on execution.

Though on paper they may have a 2-7 record, it doesn't speak to their competitiveness and heart. With so few veterans on the team, first year players have been given an unique opportunity that allows them to develop their skills through playing time and first hand experience in the league. Left sides Aingele Campbell-Stewart and Paula Bailey have jumped into their role head first and become the top two scorers on the team with Ashley MacDonald close behind playing in the middle.

Liberos Amy Vieira and Emily Vivaris have been key to providing a defensive foundation with new setter Megan Wheelans running the offense.

Players to Watch:

MacDonald was a late addition to the team but has arguably shown the greatest improvement. She may be new to the volleyball team, but MacDonald is no stranger to the OCAA. Having played soccer for the Lancers for the past 3 years, her natural athleticism and competitive mentality make her very real threat on the court. MacDonald's offense has come a long way in a short period of time and her speed on the block is proving to be a huge asset for her team.

Campbell-Stewart and Bailey create a good balance in the left sided with two different styles of play that keeps the opponent on their toes. Bailey plays with finesse while Campbell-Stewart hits a heavy ball. Both add tough serves to the team with a combined 34 aces on the season.

Second half preview:

The Lancers start the second half with a pair of key home games against La Cite Coyotes (4-5) on January 11th and Fleming Knights (0-9) January 15th. With playoffs on the line, the Lancers need to pull out a couple of extra wins to put themselves in the best match-up possible.

The team finishes the regular season back at home when they play the Algonquin Thunder on February 15.
